Power, Works And Housing Ministry Owes Contractors N226 Billion

The Minister of power, works and Housing Babatunde Fashola says his ministry is yet to pay 226 billion naira to contractors for road projects captured in the 2017 budget.  The minister received members of the house committee on works who were at the ministry to ascertain the level of performance of the 2017 budget.  The minister said work done so far on road projects was 73% but are yet to be paid for, and the existing liability amounts to 2.7 trillion naira.  He explained that since the allocation in June last year, the ministry has only received money in two tranches, august and December.  He told the committee that road projects cut across the 36 states and the federal capital territory.  The house committee on Niger Delta affairs asked the presidential amnesty programme office to provide detailed information for better scrutiny of the 2017 budget performance.  The committee said it will speed up the 2018 budget already before the national assembly.
